I worked in the film industry for fifteen years, and sooooo many times I tried to explain things to friends and family members. The ugly truth is, you really need to work in the industry to understand it's bizarre, often contradictory way of doing things. Barring that, you could read this fun, fantastic collection of essays and get a pretty good idea of how crazy it can actually be to work on a television show--no matter how far up the ladder or far into your career you may be.But there's more. There's a must-read, really brilliant essay about the right to *not* bear arms in the United States. A fan's thoughts on living without Star Wars (written in a post-prequels, pre-Force Awakens world, granted). A hysterical, touching,and brutally open essay about plagiarism. Javier Grillo-Marxuach doesn't just write good screenplays or good articles about screenplays-- he just writes well, period.

JGM's essays on the Hollywood television industry are essential reading.
Bought it, tore through it, then ordered three more as gifts for writer friends. Like the man himself, it's funny, humane, and smart as hell. Should be on the list of any aspiring TV or screenwriter. You'll learn more from it than from half a dozen so-called manuals by hacks who barely broke in, and you'll have a ton of fun along the way.
A fantastic mix of personal stories and behind-the-scenes drama, SHOOT THIS ONE is a great book for the working writer, aspiring professional, or all-around TV fan. Written by someone who has actually done it and done it well, it's easy to pick up and hard to put down. SHOOT THIS ONE is sure to join the pantheon of "must-reads" in the industry insider genre.
If you are a human being, that can read English, with any interest in the film, television, or politics of the past 30 years, and have even the slightest want of bettering your mind and life, Shoot This One should be part of your home library.

Excellent resource for anyone who wants the behind the mask inside perspective on what goes on in television from what pods are to operational themes. Javi Grillo-Marxuach brings the insights of exec, showrunner and writer from hit shows (and a hells yeah Doctor Who cosplayer) and currently working on Helix in a set of essays that really give you wit, wisdom, lots of humor and a real picture of how it all works or doesn't work. Pair this with The Children Of Tendu podcast of which he is one half with Jose Molina, also a veteran of the TV writing trenches and currently working on Agent Carter, and you have a really amazing window into TV writing.
I hesitate to give this book only three stars, because it is very, VERY good. JG-M is a fantastic and engaging writer. The issue I take is in the marketing of this book. On both the site and the back cover of the book, the purchaser is teased with the question, "did the writers of LOST really have a plan, or were they making it all up as they went?" This in my mind is a direct reference to the 16,000+ word essay that Javier wrote entitled, "The LOST Will and Testament of Javier Grillo-Marxuach" which serves as his apology and answer to that age old question that so many LOST fans are intrigued with. Alas, the essay is NOT in this book, and the two essays related directly to LOST (one about the Emmys and the other about finding the next LOST) have nothing to do with the "secrets" promised in the marketing material. As JG-M has removed the essay from his site for our reading enjoyment, I had planned on reading it once receiving this book. Again, the book is well worth the purchase and the read, but buyer beware if you're looking for those LOST writer's secrets - they aren't in this book.
Even if you are not interested in any of the numerous subjects covered in Javi's essays, you should read it simply for the quality of his writing. No subjects are dumbed down - it is assumed you, the reader, have a vocabulary and don't mind being challenged to think as you read. Most of the themes are TV related and all are personal. There is a story about how Javi, when very new to television and when the internet was new, managed with a single post to acquire a lifelong, on-line nemesis. The tale becomes so compelling I almost envy the relationship. Almost. A journeyman's love for his craft is evident in every sentence, even the doubts and complaints. I have a very long reading list, but a very short re-reading list. I will be reading this again... and again.
