Well, the hours are long, the work is repetitive, the pay can be poor (for the amount of hours worked), long period away from home/family but everyone wants to do it?

If you are focused on a obtaining a driving job, I would recommend driving Road Trains instead. The work is more varied, cover more distances and the scenery is always different. Had your HR for one year or more? Why not get your MC and get into driving road trains. Compared to driving up and down a hole all day?

Pros and Cons of dump truck jobs in the Australian mining industry.
Cons
- Experience: If you have no current experience, it can be very hard to get a start in the industry.
-Can be hard to get a traineeship position. People that get the traineeships are normally close friends or family of employees already driving. Or people that are yard hands, for the company and already have an established relationship with the supervisor in charge of hiring.
-Boring work, dump trucks are big but are easy to drive and soon the novelty wears off and you are just diving up and down a big hole all day.
-Long hours 12 hour days normally doing 2 weeks on 1 week off.

Pros
-No fitness level needed.
-Out of the harsh sun and weather conditions that the outback of Australia provides.
-Once you get experience under your belt, there are some good paying opportunities to be had. Earning over $100,000 a year and only working 2 thirds of the year.

Conclusion: There is a lot of hype about getting into dump truck driving. I think its due to the size of these machines that makes it an easy choice of subject for the media to talk about in their current affair program. They look fun to drive and you always hear people making over 100k a year. Which is making a lot of people interested in driving these big trucks. There is also a general opinion that driving dump trucks is cool which makes it more attractive to a lot of people. The reality is, its a boring job. You drive up and down a hole all day and companies main concern is stopping drivers from falling asleep at the wheel due to "boredom".

At the end of the day, if you are wanting to drive dump trucks or drive road trains. If you don't have experience, I recommend start looking for a job at a lower level. Once you are in the industry, you can then look into dump truck driving. Maybe you change your mind and glad your not driving them. Get in the industry, the average pay in the mines is above average and you often get free food and accomodation. Its easy to save while you're working in the middle of no where.

Western Australia Mining Jobs

Western Australia Mining Jobs are increasing as time goes by in 2009 and heading towards 2010.

The price of gold is at record prices and every gold mine in Australia and related sub contracting companies are keeping busy and hiring again.

Iron Ore and Nickel prices are coming back up again aswell and once these get back up, employment will greatly increase when everyone is in a mad rush for more workers.

Get ready for 2010 and the rush! Get prepared now or you will miss the boat!
Think its funny when people think they can simply just leave there job at the local supermarket and jump onto a hiring paying job driving dump trucks in the mines.
Careful planning and preparation has to be done and you need to contact a good friend in the industry who you can rely on, to fill you in with what you need to do.
Entry Level Mining Jobs are increasing as time goes by as well. There is always going to be a high demand for people new to the industry. Due to the tough conditions there is a high turnover of staff. People head to the mines and have a goal. They save there money and move back to the city to start to have a life :)

Mining Jobs in Queensland continue to rise as well with the majority of activity happening in Mount Isa. Plenty of mining jobs for women too, mining companies realise that its important to have them on board and they are also good workers!
Mine Jobs Australia and Underground Mining Jobs are a great way to save money in the mining industry. As food and accommodation is paid for and you can save nearly everything you earn!!!

Entry level Mining Jobs

Entry level Mining Jobs in Australia

We all know that the economy is picking up and guess what more and more mining companies are now hiring.

Entry Level Mining Jobs come in a variety of different jobs, there is actually an entry level job to suit everyone. From drillers offsider, pit technican, and a variety of assistant roles throughout the industry theres a role in the mines that is going to suit your past work experience.

I totally recommend the mining industry to everyone. Its great fun working in the Australian Outback, red dirt and biggest of everything, e.g trucks , bulldozers etc. Thriving industry which is fun to be part off. Also the thing I like about the industry is your employers look after you better, time is money for them in a big way in this industry. Normally there is no silly long interview process, if your good for the job you start tomorrow sort of thing. They feed you well, look after your finanicially.

Western Australia Mining Jobs

Western Australia Mining Jobs

There are many mining jobs in Western Australia. You need to take note of a few things that will greatly speed your process of becoming a driller and start making the real money.
So what this means is to learn quickly and to do your job better, almost perfectly within in the first month. Normally it can take 3 months for a driller offsider to get the simple stuff and not have to rely on the driller to keep reminding them about there duties/tasks.

Here is a simple run down of the drilling process in mineral exploration drilling:

Gold or Nickel or Iron Ore (for example) mining companies lease land for prospecting and normally contract an outside exploration drilling contractor to complete the exploration drilling.

There are three main types of exploration drill rigs, RC drilling, Air Core and Diamond Drill rigs. These are all different, the trucks that the rigs are on are different size, the motors are bigger and smaller and the sample produce for the mining company for each type of drill rig is all different.

Depending on the type of person you are, depends on the type of rig that you will enjoy working on and that suits your personality. As an offsider diamond drilling is the slowest and when the drilling is slow you may be doing 1o minutes work every hour or so when more rods need to be added. In a day you may drill 30 metres in a 12 shift, it can be slow! RC drilling (RC = reverse circulation) is faster and you may drill a TOTAL of 300 metres for the day. Air core is fast as well and in a day you may drill 500 metres for the day.

Okay, you maybe wondering 30 metres on a diamond rig and 500 metres on a Air Core rig?

Diamond Drilling: Its like a conventional drill but with little diamonds as teeth, the drilling rod is also hollow and solid rock slides up while drilling is happening. Every 6 metres, the lenth of a rod its time to pull the sample rock up the 6 metres. There is a clever tool which stops it from falling down and lets you pull the sample rock using a wire rope. This is the main offsider duty on a diamond rig is to help the driller with pulling up the sample rock and then adding a new rod on. Then you put this six metre rock into trays and break the rock off in one metre lengths.

Diamond drilling is often alot longer in duration. You may be on one whole for 2-3 weeks on a double shift.

Other Duties for a diamond driller offsider:

- Clean tools, spray CRC on the tools before the supervisor gets there for the day, makes them look clean. Get the wire brush to clean the teeth of the stilson.

-Clean up of the area

-Fill the rig, ute and check oil and water in the morning.

-Incharge of the sample ore/rock to a sent to the mining company in a good condition. At the end of the mud and sweat this is your product you are selling, not just the service.

-Keep the MUD up to a good level, MUD is like the lubricant used while drilling to stop the diamond drill bit from burning out.

-Get trucks ready for the next hole when the hole is finished.

The above is the main duties for a diamond driller offsider, the above is while you are drilling and you will soon learn and master these tasks pretty quickly. The key is to get a good driller that is happy for you to ASK QUESTIONS about drilling. This is the way you are going to learn. ASK QUESTIONS AND MORE QUESTIONS. If its not working with this driller ask with the supervisor to swap.

Reverse Circulation Drilling: RC Drilling

Is using a big truck normally an 8 wheeler with two support trucks. One for diesel, water and spare rods and the second truck is used as boost more air down the hole. As this is how this drill rig operates, large amount of air are push down the rod which is has tube in the rod. Well the air gets pushed and driver a pistion as the end which drives the drill hammer. This rotates slowly while hammering at hire reeves. The rock turns into dust and shoots back up the rod system and into your offsider bucket. You will fill a bucket every metre and then nicely arrange it on the ground near you. The mining Company with come and take samples from each metre.

This drilling is dusty and faster. Time flys on this rig and its hard work. Good money to be made and good money when you become a driller. You need to be fit and healthy for this rig. Most of the day you will be running with the buckets, adding more rods on (this time with a mechanical device)
Air Core Drilling:
Like its big brother (RC drilling) it uses the same princple of blowing air down a twin tube rod and the sample comes back up and into a bucket or bag. There is no hammer piston with air core, the bit the does the work is more like a scaper and air core is not used on rock. Its used for drilling the dirt and drilling stops when fresh rock is reached. The rods are alot lighter and the trucks are smaller. The hole depths may get up to 35 metres and during a day you may do 20 or so holes. Good organisation skills are needed as you often have to move the rig and when you are not drilling you aren't making money for the company or yourself.
Normally a high percentage is on a drilling bonus when working as an offsider as when you are not drilling the company is not making money and neither do you. If you are on nice ground and getting heaps of metres, thats when you are making the money.

Mining Jobs No Experience W.A Australia

Mining Jobs No Experience
There are many mining jobs in Western Australia that don’t require previous mining experience. Whether you are unskilled or have no experience there is many different options available and it’s just a matter of what type of jobs to aim for and go from there. Once you find a mine job it’s the about obtaining the basic mining requirements for the state in Australia you want to work in and then find companies that hire those positions.

You might be wondering?
How to get a mining job? Jobs in the mines? or work in the mines?
Well here is a few mining jobs Australia that don’t require experience.

Entry Level Mining Jobs WA
-Drillers Offsider
These work for exploration drilling companies and work alongside the driller that operates the drill rig in either exploration drilling or grade control in an active open pit mine. You need to be physically fit (no couch potatoes basically), Good mechanical knowledge helps your applications and ideally you will want to obtain an HR license. After a year you could have you own drill rig with your own offsiders, Supervisor roles once you have 10 years + experience.
-Blast Crew
Working for a drill and blast company which has the contract for the drilling and blasting in open pit mines. You will work under the shot firer and help with the deployment of the explosives for the daily blast. Down the track you can become a shot firer and then a leading hand and then a supervisor.
-Mining Cleaning Jobs
Where the workers sleep need to be cleaned once a day aswell as the toliets, showers, food hall and office building. You need a full car manual licence to drive the cleaning vechiles e.g Toyota Utes.
-Survery Assistant
In exploration there is alot of surverying done after a hole is drilling by a drilling company. Your job is to work with your surveying boss who is sub contracted to anaylyse how much gold or nickel in down the drilled hole and surrounding area. Cruisy Job, just need the basics.
-Mining Labouring jobsThere are many good paying labouring jobs in the mines. Many are through the work agencies they do pay well, as they are normally short term so pay a premium price for your services. You will need all the basic mining requirements plus a senior first aid ticket and forklift ticket helps.
-Underground truck dump truck driver
I class these as jobs for people with no experience as I have seen all types of backgrounds obtain such roles. From people working in call centers for example and only having a car license before working in the mines in this role.
-Mining Kitchen Jobs
Working with the chef in charge will be required and also preparing the numerous meals that they cook each day. Also the hundred of potatoes that need peeling!
-Sample Preparer
Like a geologist assistant this role is working with the exploration drilling team and help them with taking samples on set schedule and assisting with the geologist
-Geologists Assistant
Wide range of task, assisting the geologists in all types of task that is required, like spare hands when needed. Managing the samples from the exploration drilling as well as grade control.
-Pit Technician Perfect job for people with no experience in Western Australia. It’s like a geologist assistant in the exploration field but pit technicians work alongside the geologist in open pit mining. Help mapping out where the high grade, low grade and waste is situated so they can send a measured mix of ore to the procession plant.
-Mining Catering Jobs WA
Mining Camps house couple hundred workers and their dinners are provided. Mining Camps have big restaurantswhere they eat and the catering company needs extra helpers to be on the floor. They also have an area where workers prepare there lunch for the next day. So this part needs to remain full, filling up the apples, oranges, and chicken for example

Anything in the active mining process pays more money due to its making the company money and they are willing to pay more. So they don’t have workforce issues. With parts of the mining process that don't make the company money in the short term like the exploration area, the pay rates are not as great. Exploration is a gamble and the companies watch their wallets a lot more. Getting jobs with a company in a role which is helping them make money from mining ore; generally their wallets are open a lot more for higher rates of pay. When the gold is not being mined they are not making money! Something to think about for the type of companies to target for a job.

Want more info? Make up your mind as to when you can start work; Tomorrow or next week? Be Ready!
2. You need to buy a pair of steel cap lace up boots. No pull on's.
3. If your from New Zealand you need to change your licences over to an Australian one for your companies insurance policies. You also need an address for this to be sent too. Go to the local driver licence place to change your New Zealand licence to an Australian one.
4. You need to be clear of drugs and be able to pass a full medical test. Its going to make you look bad if you fail your drug test, the company will not be interested in you again. Your first medical for the mines, is to see what your current health is. It checks your hearing, your sight and your general fitness. Every 5 years working in the mines you are required to re sit this medical to see if working in the mines is effecting your health.
5. Have your australian bank account and tax file number ready and your drivers license before going around the mining compaines. Just incase you need to start tomorrow!
6. Its best to complete a marcsta course before heading out searching for jobs. For more information go to http://www.marcsta.com/.
7.Be prepared for hard work and work long hours. Keep thinking of your goal and why you are there. Make friends. Go to the gym regulary. Eat plenty of food to keep your health up. You need to eat a lot when you're working long hours so dont feel too bad. Try to eat often rather than getting home and gorging a huge meal; then going straight to bed. You are better off eating a large mealin the morning. A big morning meal can be "used up as energy" during work hours.
8. Stay away from alcohol. Its nice to have a couple, but keep it to maybe once a week. Too many people end up with big stomachs. Go to the gym instead of having a few beers after work each night. You will feel better for it.
9.Hang out with people with the same goals as you. If you are there to save as much money as possible its best to do this. This way you can keep each other focused on the goal and hang out while others are blowing all there money at the local pub.
10. Watch out for spiders, remember to bring your boots inside so you don't have visitors waiting for you in the morning.
11. Drink plenty of waters while working in the mines. Try and keep your urine clear looking, you will feel better for it. Drink some sports drinks to replinish the salts you sweat during the day.
